Message From The Chair

Welcome to the SMU Environmental and Civil Engineering Department. Dedicated to excellent undergraduate and graduate programs in environmental and civil engineering, the faculty and staff invite you to explore our website to learn about our department and programs.

Environmental and civil engineering are diverse fields. Graduates are engaged in planning, design, construction, maintenance, and management of the nation's constructed facilities. They are also engaged in design of aircraft and aerospace structures, shuttles, and space stations. Every major structure critical to this country depends on the work of civil and environmental engineers.

Our programs provide not only strong training in engineering but also a broad education in the liberal arts so that our graduates understand the social and ethical issues of our work as well as the impact of technology on society. Our graduates are not only prepared for careers in engineering, but are sought after by graduate and professional schools in the science, engineering, medicine, business and law.

Because of the small size of the department, our programs encourage one on one interaction between students and faculty. Our undergraduate students, similar to graduate students, participate on research programs in structural and geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, and environmental and water resources engineering including sustainability. Our active student organizations - the American Society of Civil Engineers; Institute of Transportation Engineers; Texas Society of Professional Engineers; the Environmental Society; Engineers without Borders; and Chi Epsilon, the Civil Engineering Honor Society, provide opportunities for leadership and interaction with professionals in the Metroplex engineering community.

The Environmental and Civil Engineering faculty and staff look forward to greeting you personally. Please let us know if you have questions.
